I have deployed my app to my phone with the free developer testing. The app works fine however the app icon does not generate the picture. Is this normal or is there something I am not doing correctly

Welcome to the community.
Did you add the icon image to your assets as a single image with a size of 1024 x 1024 pixels? I think the preferred format is PNG but I can’t find confirmation of that in the Apple icon documentation. As an aside, Android stipulate PNG only so that kind of gives you an idea of the restrictive nature.

Thank you for replying to me. I was able to figure out what I was doing incorrectly. I missed the check box to include the app icon assets in the deployment check box. Your link was helpful. I now have my first deployed application added to my phone.
